GEO FrameworkBy David WW

Generative Engine Optimization Meaning Shifts With AI Fragmentation

By David WW·5 min read·Sep 22, 2026

ChatGPT’s share of AI prompts fell from 70% to 50% by June 2026. GEO now means tracking citations across assistants, not one model.

  • The Shift: Comscore data shows ChatGPT’s share of AI prompt volume fell from 70% to 50% between January and June 2026 while Gemini rose from 17% to 30% and Claude from 2% to 11%.
  • The GEO Challenge: Publishers and brands must track whether AI answers mention them across multiple platforms instead of optimizing for a single assistant, because sourcing does not equal citation.
  • Strategic Action: Measure the full retrieval-to-citation funnel on every major AI platform and weight visibility by actual audience query locations.

Comscore’s Q2 2026 AI Intelligence Report documents rapid fragmentation of AI discovery. Overall AI assistant usage grew, yet prompt volume spread across more platforms. Google desktop searches triggering AI Overviews increased from 25.8% in July 2025 to 39.4% in June 2026. ChatGPT desktop conversations reached 168 million in June 2026. Claude desktop conversations rose from 1.1 million in October 2025 to 22.3 million in June 2026. Gemini desktop conversations climbed from 8 million to 89 million over the same period.

Digiday reported that these shifts force a change in how generative engine optimization is defined and executed. GEO no longer means tuning content for one dominant model. It means ensuring a brand appears in the synthesized answers that users actually receive on whichever assistant they choose.

Michael King of iPullRank told Digiday that the fundamentals of earning citations remain consistent across platforms, yet measurement must now reflect real audience behavior. “Publishers should stop asking ‘how do we show up in ChatGPT’ and start asking ‘where is our audience actually asking questions, and are we showing up there.’”

A second distinction highlighted by Comscore concerns sourcing versus citation. Tripadvisor, for example, accounted for 61% of travel sourcing by AI platforms but only 21% of citations. Digiday noted that retrieval occurs in two stages: wide sourcing followed by selective citation. Visibility metrics that stop at sourcing therefore overstate influence.

The table above, drawn from Comscore data reported by Digiday, illustrates why single-platform GEO strategies are obsolete. Brands that track only ChatGPT miss the growing share of queries handled by Gemini and Claude.

Semrush data cited in Medical Marketing and Media shows AI search visits grew 43% year over year. This volume increase amplifies the need for accurate, multi-platform citation tracking rather than volume-only dashboards.

Orthodontic Products noted that AI systems now decide which two or three sources to name explicitly, elevating the importance of consistent E-E-A-T signals across every assistant a target audience uses. BrightEdge data reported there shows 89% of healthcare keywords triggered a Google AI Overview by December 2025, confirming that clinical queries increasingly receive synthesized answers instead of link lists.

Medical Marketing and Media emphasized that citation rate and share of voice remain volume metrics that ignore whether cited content is correct. For categories where accuracy carries regulatory weight, frameworks must audit what AI systems actually state about products and safety data on a continuous basis, because published corrections do not automatically update model outputs.

Digiday quoted Comscore’s chief analytics and technology officer on the behavioral layer forming across assistants: audiences develop distinct relationships with different platforms, so measurement must weight visibility by where specific readers ask questions rather than by overall market share.

The distinction between being sourced and being cited means GEO teams require visibility into the full funnel on each assistant. Wide retrieval pulls many pages, yet only a few passages receive explicit citations in the final answer. Tracking only the first stage produces an incomplete picture of influence.

GeoVis records whether AI answers mention a brand across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity. The platform surfaces the gap between sourcing and citation on each assistant so teams can prioritize content fixes where their audience is actually querying.
